A brief introduction to THC and CBD

2019

“What is CBD and THC?”

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of the best known active compounds in cannabis. THC is the psychoactive compound that gets you “high” while CBD is active, but not psychoactive.

THC

THC, the psychoactive compound, affects brain areas that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, movement, coordination, as well as sensory and time perception.

CBD

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound and has been shown to have therapeutic potential, although its mechanisms of action have been clinically proven.

The FDA has approved two cannabidiol medications for the treatment of epilepsy.

Both THC and CBD interact with the brain’s CB1 receptor and each other. THC binds to the receptor and generates a “high” or euphoric effect. CBD binds weakly to the CB1 receptors and can dampen the effects of THC.
